Corset Sizing, Wearing & Caring

Corset Lacing - correct

Corset Sizing:
To find your corset size, you will need to measure your waist. (This measurement should be done right above the hips). Then subtract 4-6 inches from the measurement. If you are new to corsetry, then you should only subtract 4 inches. For example, if your waist measures 28 inches, then you should wear a size 24 corset. An experienced corset wearer can handle up to 6 inches smaller. Larger waist sizes can usually subtract more inches to fit a smaller corset. Refer to the Sizing Guide below for assistance with finding the right size.

Wearing a New Corset:

Step 1:
First open the back of the garment as widely as the laces will allow. Put the corset around you. Avoid wearing bulky tops under your corset. Fitted tops, or dresses will work best.

Step 2:
Once the corset is in place, fasten the front busk; do the top clasp first and the rest should follow. It is important to ensure that the gap at the back of the corset is parallel all the way up and down; otherwise, the bones may twist. Avoid having the gap at the top and bottom of the corset larger than at the waist. Remember: The corset may not produce the exact desired shape until you are able to close it completely; this may take several weeks. Do NOT be tempted to overtighten--go gradually over the several week period.

Step 3:
It is easier to lace & cinch a corset if someone else does it for you. However, that is not always an option. To lace on your own, reach around back, pull the loops gently then tighten the lacing progressively towards the middle from both top and bottom until you are happy with the fit. There should be a pleasant 'hugging' sensation, but you should still be comfortable.

Step 4:
To finish, tie the ends in a bow. If you prefer, the bow may be tucked into the corset so it does not show. Bows should never be tied in the front of the corset.

PLEASE NOTE: It is very important not to try to lace the corset closed, or even very tightly on the first several wearings, as corsets need "breaking in time". After a short period of wearing a corset comfortably, it molds itself to your body shape and the material takes the strain of waist reduction evenly. Placing too much pressure on the corset at first may damage the fabric and stitching and boning. In addition, it may cause discomfort and a negative feeling toward your beautiful new garment. Never let anyone but YOU wear your corset. It takes away your shape and causes undue stress when worn by another. Never attempt to undo your clasps without loosening the laces. To do so may actually break the busk and many times bend the fastening hardware. Respect your corset and it will last a long, long time.

Caring For Your Corset:
When in doubt, DRY CLEAN ONLY. It is a good idea (only a suggestion) to treat FABRIC corsets with a fabric protector (inside and out). This will allow for any spills to be wiped off easily. Depending on the fabric of your corset, you may be able to gently spot clean with a very mild cloth. However, be careful of "water marking" the fabric with water, soaps or dry cleaning solutions. Make sure you follow all instructions on the product container if you choose to do a spot treatment. While stains may be spot cleaned, immersion in water will provoke rusting of the metal stays. Dry cleaning done by hand is preferable if that service is available.
